To enable staff to identify and practice key interviewing skills.

Learning Objectives

  • to identify, explore and practise the skills needed to develop and maintain co-operative working relationships and to give and receive constructive feedback
  • to explore the use of assertive behaviour in effectively managing working relationships with individuals and teams
  • to identify and practise the skills needed for successfully negotiating with supervisors and colleagues

Programme

  • Introductions, aims and objectives, establishing confidentiality
  • Assertive, non-assertive and aggressive behaviour – group exercise
  • What are the consequences of being assertive? – individual exercise
  • Beliefs, rights and responsibilities – handouts/brainstorming session
  • Negotiation skills and techniques – practical exercises covering
    • body language,
    • disagreeing,
    • asking for what you want,
    • handling criticism,
    • saying no,
    • dealing with criticism,
  • Increasing your assertiveness – small group exercise
  • Giving feedback – team exercise involving observation and feedback
  • Review, questions and close
